Complicated

Posted in Uncategorized on June 26, 2009 by Alex

warning: This pool is deep and contains no bananas, potatoes, or pies. Sorry Ik.

There are times when, its as if I’m in a daze. When the teacher talks, I listen but I don’t hear. I can’t see the point of the lesson. The words on the board are white markings, incoherent squiggles, and her voice is noise. I pay attention, but nothing registers. I’m confused. Is there something goin on that I don’t know about? Do the other people know something I don’t know? What’s going on?

There are times when I am lucid. I know and understand exactly what is going on, and what I have to do. I hear the professor and understand his words. I go over the lesson in my head, simplifying terms till I can understand it just fine. I’m confident. I know what I’m doing. I have a purpose.

There are times when it feels like my eyes are open. I ride the train and watch the sunset through the windows and the gaps between the buildings. I walk through the school campus and see how the sunlight falls through the gaps in the leaves, shining through the clear, cloudless blue sky. I walk home through the rain, feeling the refreshing coldness of the water. I sit by the river and feel the wind through my hair. I watch the students walk around campus, rushing to class and chatting with friends. I watch the commuters on the train, packed together like sand in a bucket. I wonder, can’t they see what’s going on around them? The soft blanket of blue every twilight, just after sunset, lending them some last minute light before dark while they go home? The beuaty and wonder that no mega movie special effects can truly pay justice to?

There are times when I can’t sit still. I’m bounce-off-the-walls-hyper or in a “fangirling” mood. I spazz about the lastest schedules, videos, songs, and pictures of my shiny boybands. I talk and talk and talk about Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman and their performances in Sweeny Todd and how different their acting will be in Tim Burton’s Alice.

There are times when I’m so furious, I blieve I can set things on fire just by glaring at them. I want chaos and destuctiong, but I dont know why. I am angry…about nothing.

There are times when I can’t take anything seriously. When everything is dismissed with a shrug and a “meh”. When lack of energy or tiredness is explained with a laugh and complaint about not having had coffee. When serious matters are met with apathy and a blunt, cold, “whatever”.

There are times when I just stop and think. Philosophical thoughs and ispirational metaphors come and are quickly forgotten as my attention wanes. Simple, every day questions are pndered on with a deeper meaning, a different point of view.

There are times when anxiety fries my nerves to a crisp. The world becoms fast paced, every second is a precious minute gone by. I try to do everything I can, get everything done, but there never is enough time. Or maybe I’m not moving fast enough?

And there are times when ideas come. Sometimes the ideas just visit for a while, a quick hello and goodbye, and other times they will stay, filling my thoughts until, when I finally put pen to paper, I write.

So before I end this post, I’ll leave you with a quick question:

How do you feel today?

Thinking too hard may be hazardous to your health

Posted in Uncategorized on March 4, 2009 by Alex

Today in HISTCIV (History of Civilizations), we had a film viewing on Plato’s Republic. So from what I understood from it, Plato wrote about Socrates’ works since Socrates didn’t write anything of his own. It raised some questions. Let’s see if I still remember all of them =D

If The Republic as described by Plato, is a utopia where everyone is NOT equal,  just made for different purposes, wouldn’t unrest still form in the so-called “perfect” society? And why were poets to be banned from the kingdom and music and arts to be censored? Sounds like Dictatorship where the dictators are philosopher-kings. Weird. And why would romantic relationships or even mother and child bonds be a bad idea in this utopia?

And then…What is good and what is bad? If good is something that benefits other people, wouldn’t euthanasia be justified in this view? Since “putting someone out of his misery” is usually justified as being good. So does that also mean that “good” would be doing bad things for the right reasons? If so, then there wouldn’t be any “bad” either, since all said bad things would be done for a good cause,  i.e to get a higher rank, status, or job by sabotaging a colleague’s project. It would be a bad thing for him but good for you, right?

What is happiness? If happiness is to feel good, how is that different from the high addicts get from drugs, or from lots of food or sex? If happiness is to have fun, how is that different from rampaging around town destroying anything and everything just because its “fun”?

If freedom is “the capacity to do whatever one wants”, and is a good thing, why is Anarchy a bad idea? If soldiers fight for their country, almost single-mindedly, are they not reduced to meat-machines? Don’t get me wrong, I’m taking Naval ROTC and it’s fun, but everytime is see the units march on the field, they look like lines of perfectly wound-up tin men walking in unison. It’s a scary thought, especially when you’re marching with them

What is anything? And why is it anything?

Yeah I think I stopped making sense a while ago, around the same time that my brain melted. But all the same, what do you think? Leave a comment pls =)

Bad Things Happen if…

Posted in Uncategorized on January 5, 2009 by Alex

So because I was bored during new years, and eavesdropping (>.>) on other people’s conversations, I thought of a list of things which will yield bad results when done. Happy New Year XD

Bad things happen if…

  • You shake a fountain-type firework (it causes the sand in the bottom of the container to mix with the gunpowder and other things…making it go boom. In your face o_o)
  • You step on a cat. It won’t like that.
  • You try to hand-feed a dog grain. Or anything.
  • You drop a toaster (or any heating appliance) in your bathtub. With you in it.
  • You drink a full Starbucks drink before a long car ride.
  • You attempt to pick the fruits growing from the plants that creep onto the roof of your neighbor’s house.
  • You pull out the battery from a laptop while it’s running (unplugged).
  • You make any grammatical errors in the presence of a Grammar Nazi (or two).
  • You pull a prank on a cop. Don’t even try.
  • You lick an electrical socket.
  • You poke a beehive.
  • You drop your iPod.
  • You think too hard during a test. Nothing good will come from thinking about it, if you don’t know the answer in the first place.
  • You didn’t study for the said test in the first place.
  • You put off your homework, office work, columns, or any of the sort (things with deadlines) until the last minute.
  • You don’t throw the grenade after pulling the pin.
  • You don’t save your important files on a regular basis. (And then there’s a blackout. Awwww, poor you.)
  • You drink hot coffee straight.
  • You try to punch through a glass window with your bare hands.
  • You try to attempt any epicand dangerous  Hollywood movie stunt.

Okay, I can’t think of anymore. Till next time~XD

Sweet Nothings

Posted in Uncategorized on August 8, 2008 by Alex

Sweet Nothings = what I call random musings for the sake of something to think about.

Many times when I am bored out of my mind, which is during a lot of times, I think of random things. Usually they are serious, world-peace concerned issues. Other times its about whatever book I’m reading at the moment. Coming home from De La Salle University a while ago, here’s somethings that I was thinking about.

Isn’t it so ironic that the people that are really in the Navy nicer than the officers in the Navy Training course?

Its sad that people hurt other people and are persecuted for it just because they were following what they believed in or because they were told to do it by some incompetent, power-hungry leaders.

I was thinking of some other things between those two, but since I have the memory capacity of a strainer, they were quickly forgotten.

Mind you, I don’t always think of such serious issues. Like so:

Hey…Where’s that huge tomcat I saw the other day?

Oh look, I guy with long hair. Why did he tie it in a pony tail in the side of his head.

Well…I think about weird things a lot. I forget most of them quickly though. Also, I don’t really blog about what happens in my day because usual it is a boring day. If I do blog about it, then something interesting must have happened.

If someone was to have my Sweet Nothings for breakfast, they’d either have a headache or a toothache.

Flood water? What you talkin’ ’bout??

Posted in Uncategorized on July 31, 2008 by Alex

Around 5:50pm, the last class -or what was left of it since me and my blockmates went to a seminar instead- was over so Mariel and I went home. She went with her driver and I to the LRT. Getting off at Gil Puyat station as always, I was greeted by…traffic. Lots and lots of traffic.

You see, it rained extremely hard around noon or 1pm. The sky was dark at NOON but the rain let up around three, maybe four o’ clock-ish.

Anyway, when I was trying to get a jeep going to PRC, I couldn’t find any. Buses were in the way of private cars and jeeps, and all public transportation vehicles (jeeps, buses, taxis, pedicabs) were full or taken. The people in the buses looked as packed as a can of sardines. I was wondering what the fluffy was going on the whole time while walking back and forth, looking for a jeep. I remembered it rained very hard, but I don’t recall traffic that bad the last time it rained a lot.

I thought ‘Oh well. Maybe I can find a ride a little down the road’. So I started walking. And walking. And more walking…Eventually I got to a fork in the road along Gil Puyat avenue (I do believe that’s what its called) I wondered whether I should go along the road the jeeps from PRC take going to La Salle or follow the road I was already on that led to God knows where.

The catch was, I had to cross the road to get to the road that I was sure was along the PRC-TAFT route, and that meant walking, or wading, through shin-deep flood water. Putting away my retractable umbrella (since the rain stopped already) I stared at the murky water and watched the other people roll up their pants and take off their shoes to cross. I stared at my black Converse high-cuts for a few seconds then said “Meh”, shrugged and stepped into the water, pants down and shoes on.

The water flowed into my shoes (they were made of CLOTH. Converse shoes are pretty and all but waterproof? Noooooo.), my pants were immediately soaked to the shins. Not a big deal really. I thought that, If I walked a bit more through the water and cross the road, then I can find a jeep that has space for one more person. ( W : J ) <- lol CRITHIN class XD

So I had crossed the street. Yay for me. I took one look down the road and saw many, many, many cars stuck in traffic. But that’s not all. I also saw, as far as I could see, water. Lots and lots of knee-deep water.

Hitching my sling bag higher up my back (because that’s how I wear it) and putting my cellphone into my jacket sleeve instead of my pants pocket, I started walking straight through the water. I noticed a lot of people, as well as many students on the way home, went for the straight-through method as well and walked around cars that were stuck in the middle of the road.

So, walking through a lot of water for a very long time, I discovered some things:

Bus drivers do not care if you are forced to walk home through flood. Seriously, I don’t think they do. Whenever a car (especially a bus) drives by, they cause two-inch waves. Two-inches of extra water dont sound like much, but when you’re already up to your knees in dirty water, it is extremely annoying. Especially when you’re short.

Sometimes, it is way better to hoof it, than to drive. I saw one jeep that was going to PRC, full of course, but on the way anyway. You couldn’t miss it because it was decorated in the American flag’s red and white stripes. Personally, I think I rode that particular jeep thrice already. Anyway, I passed it when it was stuck in traffic and didn’t see it pass me further down the road.

Crossing the train tracks (still on foot), the road was a lot less flooded, but still had enough water to cover my nice beat up and soaked shoes. I kept walking in a straight line (since the route going to Pasong Tamo was a straight path anyway), I saw a crowd of people near the McDonald’s near the other road going to the post office. I passed all of them since I’d rather walk than stand there waiting for a jeep that would be full anyway.

I got to Shopwise and there was still nothing to ride. All the tricycles were out bring people where ever they wanted. Nearing PRC, another patch of road was flooded, but not as much as along Gil Puyat avenue. I walked right through it of course. I had lost all concern for the condition my pants and shoes were in.

I finally got a tricycle to ride along the McDonald’s PRC area. By them time I got home, an hour had passed.

A full HOUR of walking non-stop through knee-deep flood water.

For some reason, I’m not tired at all and I feel so HYPER I want to walk some more. (It’s the exercising. I swear.)

Come on, you people! LET’S WALK TO BAGIUO!!!! XD

College Life and Shiny Boybands

Posted in Uncategorized on July 15, 2008 by Alex

Oh hello. I’m sorry it has been such a long time since I last posted. So, here is what I have been up to in the past eight weeks or so…

As of this post, it is already the eighth week since classes at De La Salle University have started. I’m a freshman (frosh) there so yay! I made some friends (mostly friends of my half-Japanese friend Mariel) who are anime-addicts and gamers.

Mariel goes with me anywhere and everywhere (and I go with her) ever since we met at the freshman orientation. She loves anime as in LOVES anime, she draws very well in a manga-like art style too, and she loves Tales of the Abyss. Ronie has helped me a lot already, giving me PSP games and helping me get the old-school PS1 games to play on the PSP…he even buys me Rice Krispies when I ask (Thanks Ronie!) XD When those two -and Lorenzo who is one of their classmates from highschool- get together, they are so funny, my sides hurt. And as expected, I’m the only one in the group interested in Japanese or Korean boybands. The favorites of mine being Hey! Say! JUMP (Japanese) and Super Junior (Korean)…Sometimes I wonder if my incessant fangirling at school and on chat has gotten my new friends’ nerves yet..but then, Mariel is a fangirl herself, so ^_^

My classes as of the first term are MATH111 or College Algebra, INTHROP or Introduction to Anthropology, INTROPSY or Introduction to Psychology (because I’m taking BS-Psychology anyway), CRITHIN meaning Critical Thinking, BOTAONE means Botany and LBYBIOA or Biology Lab. Pretty basic things actually. Math is hard for me but the sciences are okay. Oh, and Bio Lab is almost always comedy hour with my blockmates -and the professor too- always cracking jokes. Corny plant-related jokes, text message jokes, puns and even the random Bahay Kubo song with the scientific names of the plants used instead are just some of the goings-on during that class. Oh, and I have Naval ROTC on Saturdays.

In Critical Thinking, I recently found out that my professor is a karerista, meaning he bets on horses. This came as a surprise to me because…well, my mother used to be a sportscaster but is now a racing journalist, my father is a jockey and my grandfather trains the horses. I take Prof. Leoncini’s being a karerista to be a good thing ^_^

I’ve started to study other Asian languages. I’m making some progress with basic Japanese and Korean. My mom told me she’ll look for her Chinese language tapes for me to listen to…someday. If I get good enough at Japanese and Korean, I would hopefully be able to understand what Chinen Yuuri and Kim Heechul are saying XD

School work and studying aside, I one day hope to see a live performance of my shiny boybands, Hey! Say! JUMP and Super Junior…What other shiny boybands do I like? Well, there’s H.O.T (High Five of Teenagers) who used to be a shiny boyband until around five years ago when they disbanded. There is also Kanjani8, NEWS and KAT-TUN who are all from the same talent agency as HSJ….hmm…That’s about all the shiny boybands I really like out there. I think I’ll just spend my boring moments hoping Super Junior will have a Super Show or at least a fan meet here in th Philippines. *squeee*

Yep. I’m done now ^_^

An Unofficial class prophecy?

Posted in Uncategorized on April 25, 2008 by Alex

Charrie and Bejae wrote one for their section (St. Cecilla) and posted in on Multiply. It was so funny, but it got me thinking…what will really become of EXiMiUS twenty years from now? Will Klarisa be the third woman President of the Philippines? Will that dopey-looking Hazel be a pilot? Will Jeanne and Marian marry Chinen Yuuri and Yamada Ryosuke respectively? Fangirls of Hey! Say! JUMP would probably be mad, but it is the “unrated version” after all.

Anyway, it got me thinking of what the St. Bernadette people will be like after twenty years, so I thought I’d write one of my own (under the influence of Super Junior’s “Rokkugo”), slightly copying Charrie and Bejae’s since I think the best person to “narrate” the story is the class adviser.

Bernaghettos’ Class Reunion

Just yesterday Dorothy Naval called me and told me all about the St. Cecilla’s class reunion in Zimbabwe. I was amazed at how far they have gone since I last saw them during their graduation. My thoughts started wandering and I thought of my advisory class all those years ago. It’s been twenty years since their batch’s graduation and I was curious about what has happened to them.

The phone rang, jolting me out of my daydream. “Hello? Mrs. Ang-angco?” “Yes. Who is this?” “Ma’am! You don’t remember me? I’m Jeana Lavarro!” “Oh! Jeana! How are you?” “I’m fine, but I really called you to invite you to Bernadette’s class reunion.” “Really? Where is it held?” ” The Ghettos agreed the reunion would be held in Hollywood. We already sent you a plane ticket and arranged lodging for you. See you there!” Jeana hung up. Hollywood? Here I come…I guess.

A couple of days after Jeana called me, I packed my things and went to the airport. As I was waiting for my flight to board, a familiarly soft voice called my name. I couldn’t place where I had heard that voice before. “Mrs. Ang-angco?” I turned around and Alex was standing there calmly, hands in an expensive looking leather jacket and looking calm, the same expression I remember seeing twenty years ago. “Alex! So good to see you again!” “Good to see you too ma’am. I offered to accompany you on the flight and bring you to the hotel.” “Really? Well thank you.”

“Flight 369 for Los Angeles is now boarding.”

Alex and I were separated on the plane due to the plane seats. The last I saw of her was when a blonde haired person, a girl maybe, sat beside her on the window side. I’d ask her who it was later. It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep and it felt like I didn’t sleep all that long when someone poked my shoulder. “Good morning ma’am. What would you like to eat?” Another familiar voice but it took a while to recognize the face. “Ivy? Is that you?” “Mrs. Ang-angco! I’m sorry, I didn’t recognize you.” I asked for the fish and Ivy left. Hours later, another flight attendant woke me up. This time I recognized her immediately. It was Ariane.

The remaining hours on the plane sped by quickly and I rejoined Alex and the Los Angeles airport. The person with the long blonde hair, now tied into a ponytail, was beside her. I was pretty sure it was a girl. “Hello again Alex. Who is this pretty girl? You’re friend?” Alex took me to the side and explained. “Ma’am. That’s not a girl. It’s my boyfriend Kim HeeChul.” I looked back at him. Boyfriend?

From the airport, Alex’s boyfriend drove us to the hotel were I was supposed to stay. At my hotel room, I found a note left for me from the Hotel’s owner. It was signed Blanche Canlas. I smiled. She’s definitely come a long way. Turning on the TV, I discovered some things. Penelope played the lead role in most of the movies and Broadway musicals I came across, Edissa was a broadcaster, Ren was voted MVP of a basketball team, and Krizzia won led her volleyball team to numerous victories.

The next morning, Alex knocked on my door. “Mrs. Ang-angco, are you ready yet? The reunion is in an hour.” I got dressed and went to the lobby where Alex, her boyfriend, and Blanche were waiting for me. Blanche greeted me warmly and escorted us to where the reunion was taking place. Alex had joined Penelope and her husband talking to Ivy, Aubrey and someone I recognized to be Jedd. Arian was already with Jo Charene and Jazel, Ren and Edissa were over by the buffet. A familiar laugh rang through the hall and I knew that Ainie had entered. I heard she became quite the supermodel.

The rest of the day was spent laughing, eating, and swapping stories. Apparently, Jeana was the CEO of an insurance company, Isai worked for Pixar, Jo Charene was a professor at Cambridge and Monica at Harvard. Shamee was a supermodel like Ainie and Pauline and Kim owned a law firm. Alex, though she never told me herself, was a psychologist and head in the field of hypnotherapy. Penelope was married to Yamada Ryosuke and Ivy to Nakajima Yuto. Aubrey married Mike He and ran their own engineering company.

I was happy to see all my former students and I was sad that the night had to end. All the Ghettos chimed in for my fare back home. I was thankful of course, sad that this might be the last time I could get to see them in person, but proud of them all.

The End***

(this is totally fictional, though I am hoping that at least some parts of this will come true. Some will not I’m sure. What are the chances that HeeChul will be my boyfriend? I mean COME ON. But I can dream can’t i? XDD)

The Yin and Yangs of Summer Vacation

Posted in Uncategorized on April 1, 2008 by Alex

The last day of classes. So many students wait for it patiently and sometimes less patiently than others. When it finally comes, students bid their farewells to their friends and rejoice that, like that Alice Cooper song, “School’s out for Summer.”

No more pencils.

No more books.

No more teacher’s dirty looks.

So it’s summer time already. There is approximately 2 or 2 and a half months till the start of a new school year. There is so much time to spend, but how can students spend it?

On the plus side, there is the possibility that you can spend your time at the beach, visit relatives in the province, fly to a different country, learn a new language, or spend some family bonding time.

But what about my vacation? The first day of my first year at college stars at (most likely) the first week of May. I can’t go to the beach, a new country, the province or anywhere outside the house. Why, you ask? Because my father does not have as much money as he used to, my mom earns less that she used to, I have no car and if I was to hang out with my friends, I can’t since my best friend is in Singapore and the rest of my barkada are not in Manila.

So far, I would rather be in school than be stuck at home. Despite the whole-day internet, I have nothing else to do. Oh, and it is HOT. It did rain earlier today but it just made the atmosphere more humid. I can’t sleep at night since I have too much left over energy for doing not a lot during the day… All I do now is surf the internet (same old, same old) and watch Yukan Club <-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!

I think I’ll just waste my summer by downloading hacks fixing the games on my PSP.

Ciao.
